Sustainability - a matter of the heart

The topic of sustainability has been very close to our hearts as a company for years. As a family business, we have been manufacturing our customised wardrobes at our company headquarters in Kerpen-Buir for more than 40 years. Through this direct proximity to our customers, we ensure significantly reduced energy consumption in the delivery of our furniture, and we are also actively working to further reduce our ecological footprint. From initial idea to built-in cabinet production and the supply chain – we are constantly evolving and strive to be an important role model when it comes to environmental responsibility.

Improving the ecological footprint

We want to take a stand for climate protection and have therefore joined the German Furniture Quality Association (DGM)’s Climate Pact. Under the motto ‘Rising up against climate change’, we are thus making an important contribution to the UN’s 1.5 degree target.

The foundation of the Climate Pact is a company’s carbon footprint. Furniture manufacturers who join the pact calculate their ‘footprint’ annually based on applicable standards. This is composed of direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, which in turn are split into short-, medium- and long-term reductions. The first reduction measures will already take effect in 2022 and will be continuously expanded by us and reviewed by an external body. At the same time, our emissions are offset by supporting climate protection projects, such as our project to protect the Brazilian rainforest.

CABINET is a climate-neutral furniture manufacturer

It is very important to us to actively support nature and give something back to it. That is why we support the ADPML Portel-Para REDD project to protect the rainforest in South America. The main goal of the project is to prevent illegal deforestation in Brazil in order to protect our planet’s green lungs.

Our commitment to the environment

Sustainable forestry

The responsible use of our resources is a major concern for us. It is important that all our wood-based materials come from sustainable forestry. In practice, this means that the forest areas from which we take our wood are reforested.

And our environmental commitment also continues in our cooperation with our suppliers. To be able to offer the wide range of decors and finishes, we work with around 400 partners. We focus on short distances, so around 80 percent of our raw materials come from Germany. This is not only part of sustainable business, but also helps when it comes to customer satisfaction – shorter transport routes not only reduce our carbon footprint, but also our delivery times.

Our cabinets are low-emission – no fear of formaldehyde

The ‘DGM Emissions Label’ contains information on the pollutant emissions of furniture and thus protects consumers from adverse health effects. The quality conditions of the tested furniture are split into the four emission classes A, B, C and D. Pieces of furniture with the emission class A label are particularly low in emissions. They meet the strict limits of formaldehyde and other volatile substances from RAL-GZ 430.

What is ‘formaldehyde’?

Formaldehyde is an unbound, volatile, organic compound that is used in the production of wood-based materials in common binders, such as glues and resins based on urea, melamine or phenol. This compound can be carcinogenic to humans above a certain concentration in the air.

Our contribution

Careful selection of wood-based materials and our suppliers has enabled us to meet the strict emissions guidelines, resulting in our entire range being classified with the best value of ‘A’.

Longevity

With all our wardrobes, we pursue the claim of producing permanently stable unique pieces that can be used for decades. If a problem does arise, we will support you at any time with any questions, replacement needs and additional fittings – for years to come. In this way, the custom-made cabinet becomes a real object of value that will delight you time and time again.

And even if your interior design style changes over the years, you have the option of replacing the fronts of your cabinet if necessary. This means that you can enjoy a new design without having to buy a completely new piece of furniture – which in turn protects the environment.

Made in Germany

We manufacture our cabinet systems exclusively in our factory in Kerpen-Buir. In this way, we keep transport costs as low as possible and thus improve our carbon footprint. Since 2020, we have been ‘Furniture Made in Germany’ certified, which is another guarantee of our high quality. In addition, our modern machinery ensures that all built-in cabinets are manufactured as efficiently as possible. For example, the furniture is planned using specialised software from which the dimensions of the individual cabinet components are fed in for ‘nesting’. Individual components can be arranged on a plate in a particularly space-saving way, as with a pattern, and then formatted with the computer-controlled CNC milling machine in a very resource-conscious way. In terms of the environment, this means that we work in a very material-conscious way and reduce the amount of waste produced.

Compact packaging

It is important to us that your CABINET arrives undamaged. That’s why we are constantly working to maximise transport safety while minimising packaging waste to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In concrete terms, this means that 100 per cent of all our packaging material consists of recycled cardboard, which is then returned to the recycling process after transport. By working with an environmental services provider, we were able to save a total of 392 tonnes of resources and 48,708 kilograms of greenhouse gases in 2020 alone – a thoroughly well-rounded cause for a future worth living.
